The Future Ahead Book: A Journey Through War and Lessons Learned

My book, The Future Ahead, delves into three pivotal periods of my life: my early childhood, the harrowing experiences of the Sudanese Civil War, and the profound lessons I’ve gathered along my journey. This isn’t a collection of opinions or complaints; it’s a raw, personal account of my life during the civil war in Sudan—a conflict driven by religious justifications against “unbelievers” or Christians, which tragically persists even today in that part of the world. Moving from city to city, I learned harsh truths about the impacts of war on the people of South Sudan. As a child, I grappled with questions about the religious motives behind these wars and the world’s apparent indifference. The civil war unveiled a stark reality: in a world where no one truly cares, you are ultimately responsible for your own survival. My parents’ courageous decision to send my siblings and me away from our birthplace saved our lives and brought me to where I am today, sharing this story with you.The second civil war, which reignited around 1983, saw the Sudanese government relentlessly attacking cities and villages in South Sudan by early 1984. Our home transformed into an uninhabitable war zone. People died from hunger as the government burned homes and food supplies. We hid from soldiers in trees, but soon they learned to navigate the dense bushes, firing their guns indiscriminately into the forest. Unlike us, they had vehicles. The constant question haunting us was, “When will you die?” The sheer terror of anticipating your own death was an unbearable burden; fear reached its absolute peak. Facing these overwhelming challenges, our survival felt like a miracle.During this dark period, I questioned the existence of God and what part of human life, if any, He protected or cared for. Some might attribute these horrors to the devil, but then, why would God create evil in the first place? These are endless questions without clear answers, like why innocent animals die without having sinned. This was the darkest time of my life; my chances of survival were practically zero. Death was the most likely outcome, the enemy’s ultimate goal: to eliminate non-Muslims, the “unbelievers.” This experience solidified my understanding of the world’s power dynamics: the powerful dominate, and the weak suffer. Whether you work in a coffee shop or a large corporation, the rules are often designed to benefit those who create them, preventing the vulnerable from pursuing dreams or experiencing true freedom. You don’t need to watch the news to see this; you witness it in daily interactions. In life, only action truly counts. My new chapter began in early 1985 when my brother and I managed to escape to North Sudan, leaving behind our parents and three other brothers forever. The Future Ahead is a book that tells the story of my life journey from a small town to the capital city. I left my birthplace at the beginning of the year 1985 when all our belongings were burned down and destroyed. That year was the genesis of my life’s uncertain journey; my parents had to make difficult choices. Death, as a result of hunger or being killed in the war, was more magnificent than life. The survival rate was close to zero since we had no weapons to defend our city. The only option for my parents was to send us away—the love parents give their children to have a future. So, my father sent my older brother and I to North Sudan. It was not an easy decision, but it was safer than staying in the South. My journey started with just one decision, which has kept me alive till today.

My birthplace

“My birthplace I was born in a small town called Pariang, now the capital of Ruweng State, after South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011. I was the youngest of five boys. Unfortunately, three of my brothers died in the civil war between the South and North. Pariang town had one boarding primary school, Catholic churches, and hospitals. During that time, education was primarily for the underprivileged and unruly children. Additionally, the school was quite far from the village and was the only boarding school available. Students would stay at the school for almost a month before they could visit their homes. Due to these circumstances, it was challenging for parents to allow their children to attend school. On the other hand, wealthier families had their children stay at home to help them with farming duties. The boys in these families were trained to be cattle keepers. Although my father had many cattle, our family was an exception. My parents had a strained relationship with my father’s sister’s son because he encouraged one of my brothers to pursue an education. This led to that brother enrolling in school.consequently, my brother asked me to persuade our father also to let me attend school. One morning in June 1982, while my father and I were on the farm, I mustered the courage to ask him if I could join the school. To my surprise, he agreed and even bought me a school uniform. That day marked the first time I ever left the care of my parents. My father would bring me milk every day. Despite receiving his support, I lived in constant sadness for two years after leaving them. I would often try to recall their faces and what they looked like.
